Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo – Book Review

I chose to read Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo, as I was looking for a lighter read following some heavier reads I had read recently.

I particularly enjoyed the narration by Adjoa Andoh, who many of you will know her as Lady Danbury from Bridgerton. She brought her character acting that I’m familiar from her TV roles to the book, and I felt she really brought the story to life.

Set in Nigeria during the 80s and 90s, Stay with Me tells the story of Yejide and Akin, a husband and wife who met each other at university.

Covering subjects including infertility, motherhood and polygamy, the book looks at the desperate measures someone is prepared to undertake to ensure they fulfil their societal obligations.

The story is poignant and funny in equal measure, and I would definitely recommend.

For the purpose of my reading challenges Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo fulfills the following prompts:

  • Black Card Challenge/ Black Girls Read Too – A Book Set in Africa
  • Pop Sugar – A Book that has the Same Title as a Song (too many songs with this title to specifically choose one, however the song that always springs to my mind when I think of the words Stay With Me by Debarge. You probably know the songs that sampled this – One More Chance by Notorious B.I.G and Foolish by Ashanti. Stay With Me was also sampled in Don’t Go by Mary J Blige and numerous other songs, so I hope you enjoy the track and also pick up the book too.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
