As George Benson and Whitney Houston famously sang “I believe the children are our future” in The Greatest Love of all, they really are if they have access to books such as “A Multicultural Picnic” by Victor Dias de Oliviera and illustrated by Eszter Miklas. It is a charming multimedia picture book that champions the benefits of being diverse and multilingual.
It seems perfect for those aged 4-9 as it will encourage parents/ guardians to read along with their child(ren) and the supervised interactivity – when using online resources – will show reading can be fun.
The illustrations were lovely, and they really complemented the story. Eszter Miklas conveyed the diversity of the heritages referenced in the book.
I would, however, have liked to learn some food and drink terms consumed at the picnic.
My main criticism is that the title could have been a bit more imaginative, given its target audience – children. For me it was too literal.
The book is available to purchase from Amazon, Book Depository and Waterstones – hardback and paperback
